The Do’s and Don’ts of Brushing: How to Prevent Hair Breakage and Split Ends

The Do’s and Don’ts of Brushing: How to Prevent Hair Breakage and Split Ends - Hair Made Easi

Brushing is a daily ritual for most people, but doing it incorrectly causes unnecessary damage, split ends, and over time, significant breakage. The difference between brushing that protects the hair and brushing that damages it often comes down to technique, timing, and the tool you're using. Here's what you need to know.

The Do's of Brushing

Use the Right Brush for Your Hair Type

  • Fine or thin hair: A paddle brush with flexible bristles is ideal — it glides through without pulling or creating tension at the root.
  • Thick or curly hair: A wide-tooth comb works through curls and waves without snagging or disrupting the curl pattern.
  • Hair extensions: A paddle brush or extension-specific detangling brush is essential. Stiff bristles or tight-toothed combs can catch on bonds and cause slippage or damage to the natural hair.

Brush from the Ends Upwards

Always start at the ends and work your way up to the roots in sections. This removes tangles progressively rather than forcing them down the hair shaft, which is where breakage happens. It takes slightly longer but makes a significant difference to hair condition over time.

Be Gentle Through Knots

When you hit a knot, hold the hair above it with your free hand to reduce tension on the root, then work through the tangle gently. Never yank through a knot — the hair will break before the knot does.

Brush to Distribute Natural Oils

A gentle brush from scalp to ends distributes the natural oils produced at the root along the length of the hair. This keeps hair moisturised, adds shine, and reduces the need for additional product.

Clean Your Brush Weekly

Hair, oil, and product residue builds up in brushes quickly. A dirty brush transfers that buildup back onto clean hair, causing dullness and product accumulation. Remove trapped hair after every use and wash the brush with a mild shampoo once a week.

The Don'ts of Brushing

Don't Over-Brush

More brushing does not mean healthier hair. Brushing once or twice a day is sufficient for most hair types. Excessive brushing weakens the cuticle, causes friction damage, and accelerates breakage — particularly on fine or colour-treated hair.

Don't Brush Curly Hair Dry

Dry brushing disrupts the curl pattern and causes frizz that's difficult to reverse. If you have curly hair, detangle with a wide-tooth comb while wet and coated with conditioner, then leave it to dry without further brushing.

Don't Use the Wrong Tool

A stiff-bristled brush on fine hair causes breakage. A soft-bristled brush on thick hair won't detangle effectively. Matching the tool to the hair type isn't optional — it's the foundation of a good brushing routine.

Don't Brush Root to End in One Stroke

The classic mistake. Dragging a brush from root to tip in one motion forces tangles down the shaft and creates the conditions for breakage. Always work in sections from the ends up.

The Right Tools Make the Difference

At Hair Made Easi, our brushes are developed for professional use and tested in working salons. The Luxury Paddle Brush is designed with flexible cushioned bristles that glide through the hair without snagging — ideal for extensions and fine hair alike. Our Wide Tooth Comb is the go-to for curly hair and wet detangling, with spacing that works through knots without pulling.

Both are available individually or as part of our hair extension brushes range, with trade pricing for salons and training providers.

The right technique combined with the right tool is the simplest way to protect your clients' hair between appointments and extend the life of their extensions.
