Keratin bond hair extensions — also called fusion or hot bond extensions — are one of the longest-lasting extension methods available. But how long they actually last depends on several factors that both the stylist and the client can influence. Here's what you need to know.
How Long Do They Last?
With correct application and proper aftercare, keratin bond extensions typically last 3–4 months before a full refit is needed. Some clients get closer to 4–5 months, particularly those with slower hair growth and excellent aftercare habits. Others may need a refit at 10–12 weeks if their hair grows quickly or if aftercare has been inconsistent.
A maintenance check at 6–8 weeks is recommended to assess bond condition, address any that have slipped or need attention, and keep the result looking its best throughout the wear period.
What Affects Longevity?
Application Quality
The single biggest factor is how well the extensions were applied. Bonds that are too close to the scalp, unevenly shaped, or applied to hair that wasn't completely clean and product-free will fail earlier. A skilled application with the right tools is the foundation of a long-lasting result.
Hair Growth Rate
As the natural hair grows, the bond moves away from the scalp. Clients with faster hair growth will need refitting sooner — not because the bond has failed, but because the extension has grown out to the point where it needs repositioning.
Aftercare
How the client cares for their extensions at home has a significant impact on longevity. The key aftercare rules for keratin bonds are:
- Use sulphate-free shampoo — sulphates break down the keratin bond over time
- Avoid applying conditioner or oil to the bond area — product on the bond weakens adhesion
- Brush gently from the ends upwards — pulling through tangles from the root puts stress on the bond
- Avoid excessive heat directly on the bond — high heat can soften the keratin and cause slippage
- Sleep with hair loosely tied or braided — reduces friction and tangling overnight
Lifestyle
Clients who swim frequently — particularly in chlorinated pools or salt water — will find their bonds degrade faster. Excessive sweating during exercise can also affect bond longevity. This doesn't mean clients can't be active, but they should rinse the hair after swimming and follow aftercare guidance carefully.
Hair Type
Very fine or oily hair can be more challenging for bond adhesion. Oily scalps produce sebum that migrates down the hair shaft and can reach the bond area over time. Clients with oily hair may need more frequent maintenance checks.

- Bonds have moved more than 3–4cm from the scalp
- Any bonds feel loose or are sliding
- Tangling is increasing around the bond area
- The client can feel or see the bonds when the hair is up
