A simple guide to protect your extensions from sun, sea, and heat
Going on holiday doesn’t mean compromising the condition of your extensions. With a few small adjustments to your routine, you can keep them in excellent condition throughout your trip from the airport to the beach and back.
Here’s what to keep in mind before, during, and after your holiday.
Before You Go:
Book a maintenance appointment
Check everything is secure and tidy before you travel. Loose bonds, grown out wefts or old tape tabs won’t hold up well in heat and humidity.
Pack the right tools
Bring essentials like a soft detangling brush, a microfibre hair wrap, and travel-size, extension-safe shampoo and conditioner. Our XL Hair Wraps are ideal for fast, gentle drying, especially useful in hot climates.
During Your Trip:
Protect from the sun
UV rays can dry out natural hair and extensions, especially blonde or coloured tones. Wear a hat in direct sun, and consider using a UV-protective spray that’s suitable for extensions.
Be cautious with chlorine and saltwater
Both can dry out the hair and cause tangling. If swimming, secure your hair in a low plait or bun, and try to avoid full submersion where possible.
Rinse straight after swimming
If your hair does get wet, rinse with clean water as soon as possible to remove salt or chlorine before it cause damage.
Dry your hair properly
Never leave extensions wet. Use our XL Hair Wrap to absorb excess moisture, then dry in sections using low heat. Avoid brushing while the hair is still wet to reduce tension at the root.
Secure your hair at night
Sleeping with your hair down can lead to matting. Use a silk scrunchie or wrap your hair in an Overnight Hair Wrap to keep it protected while you sleep. A loose plait is ideal for maintaining condition overnight.
Product Application Tips
- Apply leave-in conditioner or oil only to mid-lengths and ends
- Avoid putting the product directly on bonds, rings, or tapes
- Use lightweight, non-greasy formulas to prevent build-up
Once You’re Home:
Book a post-holiday check-up
Even with the best care, exposure to heat, sea, and sweat can wear down your extensions. A quick tidy-up or maintenance appointment will help refresh the hair and prolong its lifespan.
Looking after your extensions on holiday doesn’t have to be complicated, it just takes a bit of planning. With proper care, your hair will stay looking fresh, healthy, and manageable throughout your trip. Whether you're a stylist advising clients or wearing extensions yourself, a solid routine makes all the difference.
