Client Care 101: How to Educate Your Clients on Hair Extension Maintenance

Sep 13, 2024Nicola Wood

Start with the Basics: Understanding Hair Extensions

Before diving into the care routine, it’s essential to ensure your clients understand the type of extensions they have. Whether they’re wearing tape-ins, wefts, nanos, or bonds, each type requires specific care. Take a few minutes to explain the basics:

  • Material: Is the extension made from natural human hair or synthetic fibres? Human hair extensions can be treated similarly to natural hair, while synthetic ones require more gentle care.
  • Attachment Method: Different methods, whether it’s bonding, tape, nanos or a weft, have unique maintenance needs.

Product Recommendations: What to Use and What to Avoid

The right products can make all the difference in maintaining the integrity of the extensions. Recommend products that are gentle, sulphate-free, and designed specifically for extensions.

  • Shampoo & Conditioner: Advise clients to use a moisturising, sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner to keep the hair hydrated and prevent the bonds from weakening. Look for products that are lightweight to avoid build-up.

  • Leave-in Treatments: Encourage the use of a lightweight leave-in conditioner to help manage tangles and add shine. A heat protectant is also essential if the client plans to use heat styling tools.

  • Styling Products: Suggest serums or oils that are lightweight and non-greasy to add shine and smoothness without weighing down the extensions.

  • What to Avoid: Warn clients against using products that contain alcohol, sulphates, or parabens, as these can dry out the hair and damage the hair. Also, remind them to steer clear of heavy oils near the roots.

Daily Maintenance: The Do’s and Don’ts

Daily care is crucial for the longevity of hair extensions. Here are some key tips to share:

  • Do Brush Regularly: Recommend brushing their extensions daily with a soft-bristle brush or a special extension brush to prevent tangling. Advise them to start from the ends and work their way up to avoid pulling on the bonds.

  • Do Sleep Safely: Encourage clients to tie their hair in a loose braid or ponytail before bed to minimise friction and prevent tangling. A silk or satin pillowcase is a great addition to their routine, as it reduces friction and maintains hair smoothness.

  • Do Avoid Excessive Heat: Remind clients that, while human hair extensions can be styled with heat tools, they should use a heat protectant and avoid excessive heat to prevent damage.

  • Don’t Over wash: Explain that extensions don’t need to be washed as frequently as natural hair. Washing 1-2 times a week is usually sufficient, depending on the client’s lifestyle and hair type.

  • Don’t Pull or Tug: Whether brushing, styling, or washing, advise clients to handle their extensions gently to avoid loosening or damaging the bonds. We recommend our Luxury Paddle Brush.

When you take the time to educate your clients on how to properly care for their hair extensions, you’re helping them keep their extensions looking healthy between appointments. Not only does this ensure they get the most from their investment, but it also boosts their overall satisfaction with your services.
